This course examines different styles of writing as the selected authors explore their “big idea”. Virginia Woolf in The Waves (1931) examines futility in her inimitable style. Elizabeth Taylor in A Wreath of Roses (1949) plots the juxtaposition of unexpected events to expose the theme of life’s meaning (or lack of it). In contrast, Elizabeth von Arnim in The Enchanted April (1922) pursues the idea of how meaningfulness can be restored through personal relationships. We shall consider whether these authors succeed in speaking to future generations.

The tutor is Dr. Denise Hanrahan-Wells, whose expertise lies in both American and English literature. She has taught at Winchester University, and on WEA courses. It will be helpful if you have a copy of the books in class as we read passages from, and comment on, them.
