Magnificent 7 – Abseil off the Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth to raise funds for Lymington Community Association
On Friday 4th May 2018 7 intrepid volunteers completed the 100m abseil down the Spinnaker Tower as part of a fundraising campaign for the Lymington Community Association (LCA) and to mark the LCA’s 70th Anniversary this year.
The “Magnificent 7”, pictured above with LCA Chair Ann Jarman and the Centre Manager, Rachel Smith, included, Kelly Ayles, LCA Pre School, her partner Matt Cousins, Trustees Nigel Lang and Pete Wagstaffe, LCA Lymington Players Christopher Knox and Miggi Sharp, and volunteer Peter Scholfield. Although two of the abseilers were under 30 years, the other 5 had a combined age somewhat north of 350.
Conditions were perfect with stunning views of the surrounding area. Despite any initial doubts about the wisdom of dangling from a rope 100m above Gunwarf Quay, the overall mood at the base of the tower was of an enjoyable experience tempered with relief on safe landing.
The event was to support the much needed £2 million refurbishment and extension of the Lymington Community Centre which is due to take place over the next 5 years and is designed to ensure that it continues to serve the needs of the local Community well into the future. The LCA has already received a generous pledge of £900 000 from Lymington and Pennington Town Council.
LCA Chair, Ann Jarman, commented “We are very proud of the “Magnificent 7”. In addition to raising much needed funds, it has brought valuable publicity for this vital project. Although we don’t yet know the total amount raised, first indications are that it will be several thousand pounds. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who have contributed so generously.”
Anyone who would like to contribute to the Abseil fund raiser can do so in person at Reception at the Community Centre, or by sending a cheque to the LCA (citing “Abseil”) to New Street, Lymington, Hants. SO41 9BQ. Payments can also be made by bank transfer, please contact Reception for details.
The abseilers were cheered on by many friends and well-wishers who had travelled by coach and car to Portsmouth to support them and to enjoy a pleasant post abseiling lunch on a sunny Gunwarf Quay.
